Bear in Oxnard Cemetery Finds Tree “Just Right” for Early A.M. Slumber

An Oxnard cemetery won’t be the final resting place of a bear balancing in the branches of a tree there, but he did “hibernate” there for a bit after Fish and Game officials targeted him with tranquilizer darts.

Residents reported seeing the California black bear in a neighborhood near Santa Clara Cemetery around 2 a.m. Tuesday. Fish and Game officials found the 200-pound ursine hanging out in a tree in the cemetery and hit it at least three tranquilizers, but the bear got stuck the branches instead of falling to the ground.

Groggy and sluggish, the bear still had not come to enough to extricate itself from the entanglement this morning. Fish and Game officials are planning their next move.
