The family of an autistic girl will receive almost $6000 from a jury award stemming from a teacher’s aide stealing the student’s lunch money.
Oxnard Union High School District did not remove aide Kristen Santoyo from her position. She was caught on camera stealing the $5 a day Megan Spitzer’s parents sent with her to buy lunch at Camarillo High in 2007. Spitzer was unable to communicate the issue because of her autism.
Santoyo, who was an aide in Spitzer’s special education class, pleaded guilty two years ago and served 180 days in jail. A jury awarded Spitzer’s family $5700 in its decision last Thursday. Spitzer now attends school classes at a different school.
