Oxnard School District Appoints Interim Superintendent

Almost four months after the Oxnard School District board placed its new superintendent on paid leave, last week it approved a contract for an interim superintendent to be paid about $15,000 a month.

Julian Lopez, an educator with approximately 45 years of experience with California schools, accepted the interim position following the board’s 3-2 vote approving a month-to-month agreement allowing for Lopez to serve as superintendent.

State employee confidentiality laws prohibit trustees from speaking publicly on personnel matters. However, members of the board recently noted they were negotiating with Superintendent Anthony Monreal—a former deputy superintendent with the California Department of Education—and expect they will need to start a search for a new superintendent soon.

In mid-February the board placed Monreal, who had been in the position for less than one full school year and receives an annual salary of more than $200,000, on paid leave but did not say why. Glenston Thompson, the district’s assistant superintendent, has served as acting superintendent since then.

Lopez, who will also receive reimbursement of up to $5000 for his relocation expenses from his Montana home, likely will serve as the district’s interim superintendent until the board hires new superintendent, assuming the negotiations with Monreal go as planned.
